3.8. Service of the cooling system (depletion, washing and filling)

Do not allow hit of antifreeze on open parts of the body and the painted surfaces of the car. Immediately wash away casual splashes a plentiful amount of water. Remember that antifreeze is extremely toxic liquid and its hit in an organism even in small amounts is fraught with the most serious consequences (up to a lethal outcome).
Never leave antifreeze stored in leaky closed container and immediately collect the cooling liquid spilled on a floor. Remember that the sweetish smell of antifreeze can draw to itself attention of children and animals.
About ways utilization of the fulfilled cooling liquid consult with local authorities. In many regions of the world special points on different reception of working off are equipped. Do not merge old cooling liquid in the sewerage and on the earth at all!

Recently nontoxical grades of antifreeze were developed, however they also demand care in the address.

Check of a condition of components


  1. The wide range of engine failures is connected with violation of functioning of the cooling system. On the models equipped with AT, this system provides also ATF cooling, supporting by that optimum conditions for work of transmission.
  2. Check of a condition of components of the cooling system has to be made after full cooling of the power unit (not less than in three hours after an engine stop).
  3. Uncover a broad tank. The cooling liquid which is in system has to be rather transparent. If liquid is painted in color of a rust, the system has to be washed out and filled with fresh mix (see below). If the level of liquid does not reach top, add in a broad tank a little more mix of the required structure (see Check of levels of liquids).
  4. Attentively examine the top and lower radiator hoses together with the hoses of system of heating of salon having smaller diameter and located between the power unit and a partition of a motive compartment. Check hoses on all their length and in case of identification of cracks, swellings and signs of aging of material you make replacement of defective components. It is usually simpler to make out small cracks when tightening a hose.
  • Check hoses for existence of the wiped sites.
  • The softening of rubber testifies to the beginning of its destruction as a result of aging.
  • Too hard tightening of a collar for the purpose of more reliable fixing on an union / branch pipe of the hardened hose does not promote the leak termination, and only leads to hose material destruction.
  • Check all hoses for existence of swellings and traces of infiltration of oil at end faces. Cracks and small breaks in rubber come to light when tightening a hose easier.

Authors of the present manual recommend to make replacement of hoses approximately time in two years regardless of their state.

  1. Check reliability of fastening of all hoses on the unions / branch pipes. Leak of cooling liquid is usually shown in the form of potek of rusty or white color on the surfaces surrounding their source. If hoses are fixed on unions / branch pipes by collars of the twisted type, the last will be reasonable to be replaced more reliable worm or screw.
  2. Having blown compressed air, or by means of a soft brush, remove from gaps between radiator heat exchanger plates old leaves, remains of insects and other garbage. Try not to damage soft plates of the heat exchanger and not to cut fingers about their keen edges.
  3. Regularly, according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see the Schedule of routine maintenance), the cooling system has to be emptied, washed out and be filled with fresh mix of antifreeze with water. Such service allows to prevent development of corrosion in a cooling path and considerably increases efficiency of functioning of system.
  4. Do not forget about precautionary measures which have to be observed at service of the cooling system (see the prevention above).



  1. Cock the parking brake and prop up wheels antiretractable boots. In case of need remove protection of a case. It is necessary to start direct performing procedures of service only after full cooling of the engine, i.e. not less than several hours later after end of a trip.
  2. Having waited for final cooling of the engine, include ignition, include a heater of a saln on the maximum productivity, then again turn a key in position of OFF.
  1. Uncover a jellied mouth of a radiator.

If the engine not completely cooled down, wrap up a cover rags for the purpose of elimination of risk of a scalding!

  1. For production of cooling liquid from a radiator remove a stopper of the drain gate in the right lower part of radiator assembly. If the stopper "stuck", or is not provided at all, disconnect the lower hose from a radiator and merge liquid through it.

  1. For the purpose of ensuring freedom of an effluence of liquid weaken a stopper of release of air traffic jams.

Cooling liquid should be lowered in the drain capacity of the corresponding volume which needs to be prepared in advance. Try not to allow hits of antifreeze in eyes and on open sites of skin.

  1. In case of need, while liquid merges from the block, disconnect a hose from a broad tank and remove the last. Wash out a tank clear water (in case of need with soap). Clear-level tags on tank walls.
  2. Check a condition of radiator hoses and hoses of system of heating, and also collars of their fastening on unions and branch pipes (see above), replace the failed components.



  1. For washing of the cooling system pump in a radiator clear water from a garden hose.
  2. As soon as water, pure, free from corrosion products, begins to follow from drain gates, stop washing and strongly tighten traffic jams of drain gates.
  3. In cases of especially strong pollution or violation of passability of a radiator remove the last and make its obratnopotochny washing, having filled a garden hose in the lower branch pipe — if it is not possible to achieve positive result, deliver a radiator in a workshop of car service for carrying out necessary recovery repair.
  4. Products of corrosion and dense deposits are removed from a path of the cooling system by chemical processing — follow instructions of manufacturers of the cleaner acquired by you.

At regular performing procedures of washing of system and replacement of cooling liquid need for carrying out chemical processing of a path should not arise.

Gas station


  1. Check serviceability of a state and reliability of fastening of all hoses of a cooling path. Replace defective components, tighten collars.
  2. Begin to fill in slowly fresh mix of antifreeze with water in a radiator mouth. Continue gas station until liquid level in a tank does not rise to mark MOVE in the translucent case of the last.
  3. Establish into place a cover of a radiator and tighten a stopper of release of air traffic jams on the top hose of a heating path.
  4. Start the engine and let's it get warm up to the normal working temperature, then, drive it on single turns about 2-3 minutes — on the measuring instrument on instrument a guard track that the engine did not overheat. Muffle and wait for full cooling.
  5. Examine cooling system components on existence of signs of development of leaks, then check the level of cooling liquid in a broad tank, in case of need make the corresponding adjustment.
  6. Transfer handles of the choice of temperature of the given air and the choice of the high-speed mode of the fan to the maximum productivity.
  7. Start the engine, warm up it up to the normal working temperature.
  8. In conclusion make one more control check of level of liquid (see Check of levels of liquids).
